Let me start off by saying, I am on a personal mission this year to find, and celebrate, indie writing and publishing. But, let's face it, most self published books are irredeemably awful. And I can say that from personal experience of having read (or at least started, but then abandoned,) quite a few. But, in a sea of angst ridden vampires and hungry zombies, serial killers with no real motive and amoral hitmen, romantic comedy Trinity stands out from the crowd. The action starts when Ben Rider's childhood imaginary friend reappears in his life. From that moment on, Ben's life will never be the same. Patrick Fox provides a neat twist on this plot hook by providing Trinity with three very different personalities: a pirate, a cowboy, and a private investigator. Each of these characters has his own, highly stylized and perfectly realised, dialogue. The character of Trinity is the standout highlight of this novel, providing some genuine laugh out loud moments. My favourite moment is in the kitchen of the Welsh cottage, as Ben's ex wife tries to seduce him, whilst Trinity, in his pirate persona, ogles her semi naked body from behind. I'm smiling about it now, as I type these words. This is a feel good book, with some very funny moments along the way. I think a sequel is in order, as I would happily spend more time with Trinity. |
