This review is from: Cheating at Canasta: Stories (Hardcover)
I read the brief short story of the title and, like the other story I read called 'Men of Ireland, it was sensitive, intelligent and poignant in its examination of where we find ourselves, in relation to others, later on in our lives. The passing of time changes relationships; that of a cultured sounding man and woman who used to enjoy trips to Venice.and in the second story a scruffy Irish fellow wonders back and forth between Ireland and England on the ferry seeming to feel at home in neither place and not helped it seems, by his dealing, when young, with with the once all- powerful Catholic church in his homeland of Eire. Heavy issues written about with a light touch.
