Flawed conspiracy theory,
This review is from: Titanic: The Ship That Never Sank? (Paperback)
The author's theory is intriguing, if unlikely. However, Mr. Gardiner loses credibility in his ignorance of detail. For example, ships do not have nameplates screwed to the hull. The letters of the ships name are individual castings riveted to the hull, rather less easy to remove than the author suggests (though not of course impossible). The implication that the scam was concocted as a result of White Star losing it's appeal regarding the Hawke collision is of course nonsense. The appeal went against White Star in April 1913, a year after the Titanic had sunk, and the House of Lords judgement was in November 1914. Hardly possible for E.J.Smith to have been encouraging White Star to pursue the matter from beyond his watery grave. The book is an enjoyable piece of hokum, but I am afraid that the likelihood of there being any truth in it is slim indeed. Too many people would have known what had happened for nothing to have come out.

P. G. Croft says:
It's a THEORY--based on the evidence found, some questionable, other's not explained to my satisfaction. It's those, no matter how few, that leave the door open to warrant this books credibility. The people behind the scenes had so much wealth, power, and influence in the right places--and that ilk still does, that I can quite believe this to be true. I wait for further evidence. You display great naivety to think that ' Too many many people would have known what had happened ---'' to be able to suppress their evidence-- really? Given the age they lived in, where subservience was the norm, with threats and fear of the hire em fire em regime that prevailed. All the Main daily newspaper's were owned by Barons, who had strong links to the higher echelons of society, and who towed the government line. (evidenced in WW1 ). Evidence of this has been written in other books on the subject. Also, the crew was confined against their will ( probably illegally) coached what to say and not to say, or to keep their mouths shut altogether.etc etc. For cover-ups--look no further than 9/11. P G Croft.
