A Delicious Introduction,
This review is from: King of the Kora: An Introduction (Audio CD)
This double cd is a wonderful bargain if you're new to the diamond-sharp tones of the kora (African lute/harp), and its acknowledged master Toumani Diabate. This album was compiled by Nigel Williamson, editor of 'Songlines' magazine, from 6 Diabate albums, and introduces you to a rich variety of 'traditional' solo and duo work on cd 1, with the wonderful shimmering harp melodies ringing beautifully through your ears, including kora duets with Ballake Sissoko.
On cd 2 are a rich series of collaborations with other artists, including Taj Mahal, the superb Danny Thompson and many others, but the haunting final track 'Diabate' with Vieux Farka Toure (the great Ali Farka's son) laying down an insistent driving rhythmn, across which Toumani's crystal tones cascade and glitter, is perhaps my favourite of all.
Some helpful & informative notes also by Williamson, complements this delicious bargain package. If you're thinking of plunging into the wonderfully jewelled world of kora, this is the place to start. A lovely album at a great price.
