I think it's always healthy to have a couple of guilty pleasures in life. A nice margin whereby you can happily enjoy the things which carry the burden of shame. The type of thing that invoke responses of incredulity when those loved ones in your life discover yo like a particular thing and then turn their backs on you in disgust. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Jim Clark's directorial debut, 'Rentadick.'
Whereas Clark's reputation as one of the world's leading editors is not an issue, it's hardly a surprise he only made two films. Before settling down to win an Oscar for 'The Killing Fields'. It shows. Though at the same time it's difficult to know to what extent the film's failings are down to producers Frost and Sherrin. That John Cleese and Graham Chapman took their name off the credits is frankly not a surprise. (The original credit though remains on the DVD print.)
And yet, though one would never confuse it for anything good, It is what it is, and what it is unashamedly entertaining. fast paced and breakneck in speed. Dodgy racial stereotypes? Fine by me, don't like it, don't watch it. Julie Ege's wardrobe provided by 'Mother Nature'? Lovely. A cast clearly told by a director whose never directed actors to do what they want? Yep, consequently you won't feel 90 minutes go by. Originally I couldn't be sure whether to give the film five stars merely because of entertainment value, or one star for the fact it falls way short of being good. I compromised, three stars is accurate.
