Praying for enlightenment,
This review is from: Dictionary of Proverbs: And Their Origins (Paperback)
It's an ill wind, they say, that gathers no moss. But what does that well worn saying actually mean and what were its origins? These questions have vexed me and my Nan for years; "Matt!" she barks "If you can't stand the heat, then make lemonade". I nod politely and pretend to understand but if truth be told I didn't get many of these even before her befuddlement set in and now they are positively incomprehensible. I've got high hopes for this little gem though, it's very comprehensive and whilst i haven't found many of Nan's in here yet it only arrived yesterday so early days, as my Nan always tells me "Patience is a virtue, possess it if you can, found seldom in a woman who isn't called your Nan". Bless.
