This review is from: Cannibal Holocaust - 2 DVDs Steelbook (Uncut) (DVD)My review is for the uncut German steelbook release from XT video(fantastic holographic cover design!).
I have seen this film many times and I still don't know what I really think of it! Mainly because(like many others)I am conflicted by the animal killing which is sickening and pointless. No matter how many times I watch this film those scenes don't get any easier to stomach(or justify)and I find myself getting really annoyed by the end. This is such a shame because I think this tarnishes an otherwise brilliant movie.
Having said that(here comes the confliction again!),the nasty, callous and sickening feeling of these scenes seem to carry over into the disturbing staged scenes to make them even more effective. For example, right after the ant-eater killing(a particularly horrible scene)comes the adultress-punishment scene! This on it's own is already a horrific and harrowing part of this movie, however, coming straight after this graphic and brutal animal slaughter makes it even harder to watch.Indeed,it's this relentless pacing in the film that makes you tempted to reach for the stop button. You are just constantly hit with so much disturbing and morally questionable material that it becomes hard to sit through.Even amongst more recent shockers like "Martyrs","Antichrist" and "A Serbian Film",this remains(for me)the ultimate cinematic endurance test.
A film that lives up to it's reputation,Cannibal Holocaust is certainly brutal and shocking....maybe even reprehensible. But it is also undeniably original and well-made.Definitely a pub-debate type film!
