Too many people write off Bjork as one of pop`s most irritating upstarts, but if there ever was a reason to silence those critics, it would be "Dancer in the Dark".
As an actor myself, Bjork`s performance as Selma is magical - rather than overstating the character, as too many Hollywood actors tend to do, she`s just understated enough to draw audiences to her. Also putting on a convincing performance, is the superb Catherine Deneuve, who seems almost completely absorbed in her character throughout.
On top of this, Bjork`s magnificent score, which includes the sublime "I`ve seen it all", and the heartbreaking "New World" (I won`t spoil the ending for you, but that song`s so much more poignant after seeing the film), you really can`t go wrong. This is the quintessential musical for people who look for a bit more in their entertainment. It will make you think far more than it will make you dance, but that`s why I love it.
