ADS-B on a budget,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: KEEDOX® DVB-T USB TV RTL-SDR FM+DAB Radio Tuner Receiver Stick Realtek RTL2832U+R820T
I don't own and have never experienced a 'real' ADS-B device that is specifically designed for the purpose. I can't therefore make any comparisons with this dongle.
What I can say though, is that for under ten pounds and after only a short international delivery wait - I have the ability to see ADS-B traffic. The aerial in the kit does work although things would be improved by a proper tuned 1090 antenna I'm sure.
So with the little whip against a 1st-floor window, I can see aircraft to about 50 miles. Any less than about 10,000 ft and that range tapers off. It is able to read very approx. 300 messages a second and appears to have a very good signal strength. I can't see why a decent aerial with a 360 degree horizon view wouldn't be brilliant. What's more, you can offset the obvious cable losses at these high working frequencies by mounting the dongle closer to the aerial and increasing the length of the USB cable. After all, you don't need access to the dongle.
I took the advice of not letting Windows install any drivers and instead used 'zadig' and rtl 1090 software (free download).
Considering this was a very quick test with no proper antenna, things can only get better! You simply cannot go wrong at this price.
Get one before somebody realises they are 15 times less money than a 'real' one and sticks the price up!
