1.0 out of 5 stars So bad it's good., 27 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Getting Rid of Matthew (Paperback)
The premise of this book: middle-aged man is cheating on wife. Mistress begs man to leave wife. Man leaves wife and mistress discovers she is no longer interested in him...just as he's about to move in with her, noch. Mistress then ends up befriending wife and discovering she's actually quite a nice person really. Hilarity ensues. Or not.

I don't know if this is the worst book I've ever read. But it comes close. While the story could have worked if written by someone else, in Fallon's hands it's totally unconvincing, particularly when combined with an absurd sub-plot about Matthew's son. The ending is even more so, but I'm not going to spoil it.

However, the absolute worst thing about this book was its characters. Sophie, Matthew's wife, and Claudia and Suzanne, their unhappy teenage kids, are the only remotely likeable characters. Matthew is a pathetic old fool whose appeal is never really explained. Helen is sociopathic. Rachel, her best friend, turns into a Bridezilla after meeting the Perfect Man. Matthew's family deserve to be put into a rocket and fired at the sun. Helen's colleagues are either paper-thin or hopelessly bitchy with the mental age of 6. And so on. The appeal of a book, for me, lies in making the reader care about its characters. However, I honestly did not care what happened to any of them; it was almost impossible to engage with the story.

You have to laugh, though, at how something so unspeakably bad managed to get published. Read Got You Back, Fallon's second book, which at least has some redeeming features, and only read this for its sheer trainwreck value.

You can't miss it - it's all over the book jacket. Main claim to fame?
