Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)Well researched page turner.
Set in the "Year of the four emperors" this first book by Ventmore-Rowland is well written and a good page turner. The author refers to places by their latin names during the story and I felt this involved the reader more, and I personally enjoyed this being a bit of a Roman history enthusiast, but would all readers recognise Camulodunum as present day Colchester or Hispania as what we now call Spain. However, this may be explained in the maps section at the start of the book which was missing from my publisher's proof copy. As the previous reviewer states above, I would have liked to hear a bit more about "Otho" as it would have been interesting to see him in his role of Emperor, (albeit his reign only lasted about three months). Severus (the main character) is well written and his traits and thoughts make him come alive and very believable as a Roman citizen of of the period. I look forward to "hopefully" reading more about Severus in the future. Well done Mr Ventmore-Rowland.
