Woo Are You?,
This review is from: A Better Tomorrow 2 [DVD] (DVD)
This is like mega concentrated John Woo. All his stylings, imagery, and codes of honour maximised by 10. The plot is absolutely ridiculous. To compensate for the fact that Chow Yun Fat's character is dead, but had proved so popular in the original, they just bring him back as his identical twin, basically the same character.
The amazing trio of actors who are Li Tung, Chow Yun Fat and the late great Leslie Cheung are wronged by triads and basically go on the warpath. Their code of honour and morals dictates that they must. The subsequent melodrama and stylised shootouts is classic John Woo. Guns which never run out of bullets are continously fired in slow mo while sliding down bannisters, jumping over tables etc.
Three scenes make this movie a classic.
1) Chow is enraged at a (I think Italian?) gangster in NY for his lack of respect for fried rice. "For you it is just rice, for us it is our family. DON'T F**K ON MY FAMILY!" A classic piece of broken English.
2)Chow sliding down a staircase backwards with his friend screaming in one arm, and a blazing shotgun in the other, picking of enemies with pinpoint precision.
3) The whole final shootout. Has to be seen to be believed. The body count is outragous. The influence on Hollywood is there for all to see.
I'm not really an action fan but this film stands out. Its the epitome of cult. So over the top and stylised, it looks amazing. You just have to look at it and say, this is Hong kong in the 90's, this is John Woo. Has me in tears and in stiches every time.
