British Indie Pop at its best,
This review is from: Scouting For Girls (Audio CD)
I heard the single on the radio and thought this band sounded like a breath of fresh air. They didn't sound like an indie band that takes themselves too seriously or has big pretentions to stardom (as indicated by the clever and witty name of the band). On the strength of the single I bought the album and find that they are just that....a breath of fresh air.
I don't understand people saying they sound like everything else because anyone who knows their indie rock/pop will notice the obvious differences this band brings. For starters, there are very few piano led groups playing music in this indie pop style. The song writing and lyrics may not win mercury prizes as someone observed but it betrays a down to earth songwriter who has no desire to make social or political observations in his songs (al a the Kaiser Chiefs) but its fun and witty. I laughed out loud at some points (the hidden track about Michaela Strachan is pure genius) and has plenty of catchy choruses and sing-a-long lyrics. Scouting For Girls music is just a big bag of fun. The band sound like they are having a real laugh when they write and perform songs and this comes across to the listener. It never fails to bring a smile to my face and I often give it a listen on my daily commute to put me in a good mood in heavy traffic.
As with the person who reviewed below, if you are not a fan of the style of music you are unlikely to like this album. But also, this is nothing like The Kaiser Chiefs or the Fratellis. It is less rock guitars and more piano led pop. I don't like comparing bands as I think all bands are different but if you need some indication Scouting For Girls are a bit like Keane if they were just in a really, really good mood. If you like the singles She's So Lovely and Its Not About You, you will love the album, simple as that. Its all in much the same down to earth, catchy and sing-a-long style and is well worth a listen. Buy it now and when you get it, play it really loud and just have a lot of fun singing along.
