A bitter disappointment,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Something More Than Night : the Case of Raymond Chandler (Paperback)
I was really looking forward to this, having read several other books about Mr. Chandler.
This 'print-on-demand' publication has all the hallmarks of a university dissertation or thesis and is about as interesting. The author may well score high marks for 'literary criticism' but not for readability.
It takes a certain sort of genius to take the work of a novelist which appealed to a mass audience and turn it into this dry as dust tome.
I usually prefer not to write a review at all if a book fails its promise. In this case, all buyers beware. If you are a uni type you might enjoy it. Me? I'm just a guy who enjoys Raymond Chandler's books and was keen to learn more about him ... this I did, but not from this book as I gave up at page 87 [of 242] when I hit another long paragraph ... like a page long! According to the back cover blurb the author hangs out at The English Dept, University of Missori ... where they presumably don't do studies in punctuation.
