The EBM Master Returns,
This review is from: Today We Are All Demons (Audio CD)This is Combichrist's 4th studio album. If your familiar
with Andy LaPlegua's music, you'll be right at home here.
My 1st impressions on listening to TWAAD was that it just
didn't have the same power as 'What The...Is Wrong With You People'
On listening a 3rd,4th & 5th time, I had to change my opinion.
There is no standout tracks like 'Electrohead' 'Get Your Body Beat'
or 'Blut Royale'.
However the entire album is pretty much listenable. As opposed
to previous releases (prior to WTFIWWYP) that have some great tracks
surrounded by filler, that just sounds like Andy LaPlegua messing
around in the studio.
It starts with 'All Pain Is Gone' This is just classic
Combichrist, nothing new here.
'Kickstart The Fight' Very much in the KMFDM style,
but with a wicked electro-beat that they could never match.
'Sent To Destroy' is included but, if like me, your a fan, you've
already heard this bad boy 6 months ago.
'The Spit', I enjoy this number, voice samples again, but skillfully
'The Kill V2' Vocals have been added to this instru-mental. It
works quite well.
The other tracks are very much in the same Combichrist style
as past albums. Although I will say that Andy has himself on
vocals nearly every song apart from the 'Spit'
'Can't Change The Beat' is my favourite track. This is Combichrist
at his best. Not as heavy as previous stuff, but very high energy
and a joy to pump up the volume to.
The title track 'Today We Are All Demons' is a sort of ballad, and
IMO LaPlegua should stick with what he does best, not slow it down.
I can't help wondering if Combichrist may have backed himself into
a corner with the 'Electronic Body Music' tag. I believe some of
the beats are quite similar to previous albums. It just leaves
less room to manoeuvre, that's all.
I admit, I'm being quite judgmental. I had been really looking forward
to this album since it was announced. Am I disappointed? Yes, a wee bit.
Good album, just not as good as I hoped for. Which is a shame, considering Combichrist are the most exciting band I've heard for a long time.
