5.0 out of 5 stars Super Box Set (Pun intended), 26 Aug. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Superman Motion Picture Anthology 1978-2006 [Blu-ray] [1978] [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
The superman films have always had significant meaning for me as along with He Man were my staple diet of superhero nutriion as I was growing up.
This box set therefore in my opinion is absolutley fantastic. The only thing I dont understand is why I didnt buy it sooner.

Great quality sound and visuals, only let down by Superman IV(Which I remember seeing at the cinema aged 6). The storyline and the cost cutting production I am sure was an embarrassment for all involved.

Apart from that the extra features and the restoration of the first three films and the inclusion of Superman Returns (which was harshly treated by critics and fans)is great value for money. The box packaging is also great with the only negative being the Spanish script on the discs.

Why buy it?

Christopher Reeve is terrific as Superman/Kent in the first three films and his portrayal has stood the test of time. Superman II in my opinion is the best of all of the films included in this set. It is a fantastic story of romance and good old fashioned good v evil with Reeve adding another dimension to the dilemma of Superman as he becomes mortal.

The Donner cut again is an excellent addition with the extra scenes of Brando a real treat and is really how the original Superman II should have been released back in 1980. It is worth buying this set just for the Donner cut and the featurettes so go on you wont regret it.

The best box set money can buy!

Actually Superman Returns was well received by critics & fans; but Warner Bros wanted above $500.000.000 in gross net profits. Superman Returns grossed $391.081.192 at the box office. Superman: The Movie only grossed $300.218.018 at the box office which makes Superman Returns is the most successful Superman film to date.

this may be so, but the original movie didn't have the advantage of DVD and Blu Ray sales, as well as being released back in the 70's. convert $300 Million to todays currency and it probably would have been 3 times as much.

Thanks for the review. I have only just started watching my set. You have given me the answer to the first thing I noticed - the Spanish script on the discs- at least I now know it is not simply the set sent to me. It is not really a major problem- but just a little odd, but I suppose for the price this set cost it seems a bit churlish to make an issue of it.
So far I've only watched the extras in the first disc. I found the old 'Mole Men' film unintentionally hilarious. The posse chancing after the two small people wearing very tight jumpers and very odd make up and shooting and screaming at them etc was, to me, very amusing. Mind you, when these were made film making was very raw and low tec.
