Am I a Formula 1 fan, no? So, now we've got that out of the way, why have I given this film five stars?
Ron Howard, for a start - he manages to balance action, humour, sympathy and strength in equal measure as director and he is also blessed with a cast in which there are no weak links. Chris Hemsworth is mainly known for the "Thor" movies but "Rush" shows that he can also act very well and he perfectly captured the "devil may care" nature of Hunt.
Daniel Bruhl, for me, is the stand out as Lauda. He held me captive because he conveyed the sense and strength of the man - how he knew people made fun of him, that they thought he was far too serious but he didn't let any of this stand in his way, he would only do things his way. "Rush" examines the relationship between the two men and how their constant niggling spurred them both on to achieve great things.
This film to me is a hidden treasure because I wasn't overly fussed about watching it but it held me from start to finish and, two days later, I find myself re-running it in my mind. Absolutely gripping.
