Like, so so-so,
This review is from: Arguably (Paperback)
I just don't really like his writing style. He's too "intellectual" in that he's obviously been to a good university and read the classics, and he wants you to know it. I don't care and fail to connect. There is just too big a generation gap between us. His opinions generally don't chime with my own. We're coming at things from a vastly different point of view. Put it this way, I doubt we share the same taste in movies.
His writing is not for me. Also God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything was a tiresome book that I abandoned after about an hour of reading.
I was loaned this book. I would not have bought it myself as it looked rather skimpy on good bits. The ratio of interesting to not interesting was not promising. I very roughly estimate that I didn't read circa 400 pages out of this circa 750 page book.
These are the notes I made of the parts I did read. If I haven't mentioned it then I skipped it.
Pg 54 - JFK
I already knew JFK was a weak president so he's not pointing out anything new to me.
Pg 70 - Lolita review
Boring and pretentious review. I barely finished reading it.
Pg 124 - Foxhole atheists
I got bored halfway through the article and gave up.
Pg 131 - Washington novels
Gave up straight away.
Pg 353 - JG Ballard complete works review
Another boring dud that I bailed on before the end.
Pg 380 - Harry Potter review
Mildly interesting review of the seventh, and final, book in the series. It's a minor review of no astonishing insight or full of clever writing. Nothing remarkable and it's hard to see why it was considered note worth enough to be included in his collected published works.
Pg 389 - Women aren't funny
Interesting article. Makes some good points and could have been longer. Best thing so far. A solid, decent read.
Pg 397 - Review of Steig Larsson's second book
Okay read. Nothing to get worked up about.
Pg 403 - BJ sexual practice
It was okay.
Pg 411 - Sexual toilet encounters
Very amusing short article.
Pg 426 - Wine drinking in restaurants
Amusing short article.
Pg 532 - Suicide bombers in Israel
Good but it doesn't say anything new.
Pg 541 - Agent Orange in Vietnam
Pg 548 - Baader Meinhof Complex film review
It was okay. Very hard to follow the group's logic. Personally I was bored by the movie and gave up at about the halfway point.
Pg 553 and 556 - North Korea
Two interesting articles.
Pg 625 - Review of Martin Amis' Korba The Dread book
Some good stuff but overlong. I don't like his review style of learned comparison, and the picky taking apart of words and phrases. Okay overall.
Pg 640 - Imagine Hitler
Pg 654 - The diaries of a German Jew who lived through WW2 and under the East German government
The best part of the whole book.
Pg 661 - Review of a book that states that WW1 and 2 shouldn't have happened
Good review of an odious sounding book.
Pg 669 - Same as above but by a different author
The same old ground as the previous review so I gave up due to a lack of interest.
Pg 709 - The racist word
Short but interesting. Well worth reading.
Pg 722 - Don't Mince Words
Hard to describe. Alright I suppose.
Pg 736 - The use of the word "like" in English
Pg 745 - The rude word and the British Empire
Okay short little titbit of an insubstantial article.
Pg 748 - Too many books, not enough shelves and time to put them away
Barely a blog post. Okay for what it is.

"I just don't really like his writing style." Yes, well, it is very different from yours.

Lynne C. Gill says:
In repsonse to BS on Parade : Dear me, what an incredibly ignorant and boring young person you must be! To dismiss in such a cavalier manner the writings of an acclaimed intellectual is merely to show up your own intellectual shortcomings. You cannot review what you haven't had the fortitude to read . Your posturing is tiresome.
