This review is from: Northern Soul: 20 Original Classics Volume 2 (Audio CD)
Another selection of stompers, floaters, and floor-shakers to add to the ever-growing list of Northern Soul compilations. This plainly-presented 22 track release is the follow-up to the impressive Northern Soul . That compilation was rich with 60s and Northern Soul classics. Northern Soul Vol. 2 is as well, with Fontella Bass's thumping 'Rescue Me', The Supremes yearning 'Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart', Yvonne Baker's stirring 'You Didn't Say A Word', and Billy Stewart's delirious 'Secret Love' all particularly worthy of commendation. It also boasts a fair number of rarer tracks which I liked, such as Joe Cato's 'I'm So Glad'. A lot of aficionados will look to the track listing, see that it includes the likes of Greg Perry's 'Variety is The Spice Of Life', and criticise this economical collection of mid- to high-tempo numbers, because of its catholic definition of what is 'Northern Soul'. But to be honest I am just glad that I have been granted the opportunity to hear the likes of Bobby Hutton's 'Lend A Hand' for the first time.
