This isn't epic fantasy... I like that. I also like that there are a number of things that happen that have to do with the main plot but that aren't overtly written into it. In a way it feels more like a road movie than your average fantasy novel. As so often in fantasy novels the characters rely on fantasy stereotypes about thieves, magicians etc but there's more to the characters than that. Mostly their characterisation comes out in their relationships with each other. And that's what kept me reading, that I wanted to know how the history of the relationships and how they would develop through the book. That is particularly true for the two main characters and their budding romance.
