Not great but not bad.,
This review is from: Odyssey One (Kindle Edition)On the positive An enjoyable romp with adventure and action. One of the most creatively unpleasant FTL systems I've even come across (They discuss sedating as much of the crew as possible for future jumps after the first one!) Definitely some interesting ideas.
On the negative, this could have done with more editing. I don't say that meaning there are mistakes, I mean it could have done with being tightened up. There are too many cases of what I would call data dumps or background information that really wasn't needed. The characters are a little two dimensional but military science fiction really isn't a genre given to deep characterisation. Also on the subject of characters the author sometimes shifts between using their first and surnames, when he really should have stuck to one to avoid confusion.
Now frankly none of those flaws were deal breakers for me. What I wanted from it was a book that would get me through a week of commuting with a tale of spaceships shooting at each other and that's what it did. There is supposed to be a follow on book coming out later this year, while I won't be rushing out (metaphorically speaking) to get it, it will be on my 'to read list'
