This review is from: Song Quest (Paperback)
I began reading this book straight after reading the 5th Harry Potter book. While I am a big Harry Potter fan, I was pleasantly surprised by "Song Quest". Although the two books cannot be compared in some ways ( their themes are really quite different ), they both are well written.
Roberts has provided young adults with something original and often thought provoking. For example, the treatment of the Quetzal could well be a metaphor for how peolpe mistreat animals or even - on a grander scale - those they see as inferior.
The basic storyline is that a young female Singer, Rialle, has to accompany the Second Singer on a quest to try and stop the Merlee from being killed for their eggs (Merlee are basically mermaids and mermen).
There are elements of the magical within this book, but there is a strong and intelligently thought out storyline also.
I do have to admit that this book took me a while to get into though. And at times, due to research for a degree, I neglected it, having to go back over the pages I had previously read. Those who can make time for it (and I doubt many younger readers would have such committments!), are sure to enjoy it.
Even if you are an ardent Harry Potter fan, give this a try. You may be surprised and find you enjoy it, proving there is more to life and children's literature than Harry Potter.
