This review is from: Temptation: The Very Best Of Heaven 17 (Audio CD)
If you were a fan of Heaven 17 in your teenage years, you probably still love their songs. If you are from a younger generation, and like current groups like Goldfrapp, Hurts, Royksopp, Friendly Fires and Filthy Dukes, you'd probably find much to enjoy on this CD. I watched Heaven 17 last weekend, live at sub89 in Reading, and I'd all but forgotten how well crafted their songs are, with a clever use of bass synth riffs and sparkly lead line synths, topped off by the strong manly vocals of Glenn Gregory. Crushed by the Wheels of Industry is the sort of tune you can imagine Thomas Dolby would come up with, and tracks like Let Me Go and Come Live With Me stick in the head with easily remembered lyrics and an imaginative use of synth sounds. Where Thomas Dolby might have used slightly oddball synth noises, which could sound like a wasp buzzing under water (and I love Thomas Dolby's early work), Heaven 17 are similarly adventurous with sound, but they never stray too far from the golden rule of giving a song a very strong hook line. Listen to this album on a decent set of headphones, like Sennheiser Momentum, and if you're new to 80's synth pop, I suspect you'll soon be building up a collection of music by the likes of Heaven 17, Ultravox, Human League and the rest.
