clunky, boring and only occassionally good.,
This review is from: Jason King: The Complete Series [DVD] (DVD)it just goes to show that not every t.v character is popular enough to have an entire show written around him/her and jason king is one of them, sadly.
in "department s," the jason king character was put to excellent use as he shared the spotlight with two other regulars, thus you didn't see too much of him.
alas, with "jason king" the success was not repeated: the stories are too boringly made with not enough intrigue or excitement, it is just a case of everyone going through the motions without showing a spark of originality anywhere along the way.
peter wyngarde himself has confessed that he regreted signing up for the series as he much preferred making "department s." i have to agree with him.
even so, there are still the same gallery of great actors to watch inspite of the truly awful material with which they are lumbered.
the footage is very grainy and it betrays the fact that this is a low budget affair, with none of the care and attention afforded to other I.T.C shows.
a huge disappointment but with one or two quite good episodes here and there.

Although I would have squeezed it an extra star, I find myself tending to agree with most of what you say. I remember the huge popularity of the Jason King character that was generated by the far superior "Department S" (many 40-something 'Jasons' around the country now stand as evidence of that!) I caught the JK series on ITV 4 a few years ago & as you say, some of the episodes are quite good but IMO the series was over-reliant on the popularity of the JK character to carry the series through what was by ITC standards, some pretty weak storylines & scripts. For me, the series does possess a sort of kitschy charm, but along with Gene Barry's "The Adventurer" this series IMO is one of the ITC's weaker efforts.

yes indeed. i also read that peter wyngarde himself was unhappy about the "jason king" series.
