This review is from: CiT 3.5 inch USB 2.0 SATA and IDE HDD Enclosure (Accessory)
I wanted a low cost way of re-using a sata hard drive that I recovered from my freeview hdd recorder. The tuner had failed but I knew the hard disk was ok. This CiT enclosure fitted the bill, as it is inexpensive but well made. After fitting the drive which is pretty easy I connected it to the pc and as I expected it was NOT recognised as a usb mass storage device. My windows 7 pc installed drivers and said the disk was working fine but it did not show up anywhere for me to access it. This is because it came from a TV hdd recorder so not formatted for use with a pc. A quick Google pointed me in the direction of the disk management program on my pc. (click on start>right click computer>manage>disk manager). In disk management there is a list of all the disks connected to the computer, lo and behold my disk was showing up there. So all I needed to do was allocate a drive letter, I chose N which is a long way down the list so as not to conflict with any other drive that I may connect to the pc. Then I had to format the drive, after which, like magic my disk became a normal external usb mass storage device. WARNING: make sure you format the correct drive as formatting anything else could wipe valuable files from you computer. So if you buy this enclosure, try it and think it is malfunctioning, it could be as simple as the above to get it working correctly.
