Dennis exposes the depths of evil and cruelty to which human beings can descend, in the form of his father's treatment of him and his beloved pet dog Monty. When I read the passage about how his father had his dog murdered I could feel my heart constricting and I couldn't breath. The abject sadness that I felt for the termination of the loving bond between Dennis and his dog was palpable and too much for me to bear. I just can't fathom how hypocritical monsters like the father can face themselves in the cold light of day- especially when they profess their belief in God and regularly trot off to church to mumble their sublimations. The best people in this world never go near a church, content in the fact that true goodness comes from within and can't be taught by ministers or clergymen.
Dennis writes extremely well and is a natural storyteller and I would urge everyone to buy any of his books. They can be very sad but ultimately they are uplifting. I share with Dennis his deep love of nature and all the creatures on this planet. It is just a great pity that not every human being shares this love of the natural world. Perhaps, hopefully, they will be evolved out.
