Ok, so despite the dodgy reviews I thought what the hell, it's 8 quid and it has DTS HD Master lossless audio, so I'll get it. And I was really pleasantly surprised. For starters, let's talk about the DVD. The DVD of predator, (special edition) is areally pretty shocking print, it's dark, washed out with lots of noise, flecks, cigarette burns, and a half bit-rate DTS track which is either too quiet or too loud. People saying that this blu-ray is no better than the DVD are either quite literally insane, or perhaps watching it on a poor tv, or via a poor BD player. Yes, the picture is not 'jaw dropping', but what do people expect? It's just a high definition format, it's not a format that can completely digitally recreate a 20 year old film to the same standards as something that came out last year! Predator on blu-Ray is unqeustionably the finest that I have ever seen this awesome film look, and I have had this on every format since it was released. The picture is really sharp detailed and clear, the opening chopper sequence has little to any noise on the print, and the jungle looks glorious. (just check out the scene where they climb up to the helicopter). Colours are really striking and vibrant (so much so that the skinless General Hopper and his unit look even more horrific). But also, when it comes to BR, don't forget the sound, and the Predator DTS track is absolutely awesome. From the opening floor shaking rumble of the spaceship, to the clear vocals as the mission is laid out, to the explosions and gunfire of the attack on the compound, the sound is dynamic, immersive and beautifully balanced throughout. The only downside to the release, is the complete lack of extras, but then if you're a fan there's every chance you will already have the special edition DVD. So basically if you want predator looking and sounding the best you have EVER seen it, then don't hesitiate to get this Blu-Ray!
