Das Rheingold is so difficult to stage that audience have to use their imagination since the visual spectacle is beyond any theatre technology (perhaps the Met excluded). However this production really has made a visually spectacular production truly worthy of Wagner's intention. It is simply stunning to watch. For the first time the transformation scenes do justice to the music. The success is due to the amazing lighting and projection effects. Visually there is nothing that comes close to it.

It is also a really good performance with great singing and excellent sound - nearly as good as the Met and Bayreuth production but with MUCH better sound! Zubin Metha has become a fine Wagnerian with his high tension conducting!!! THIS IS NOT A SECOND RATE OPERA HOUSE TRYING TO MAKE A NAME BY STAGING THE RING!!! So many minor houses try but are just not up to the job!

This is ONLY Das Rheingold that is worth seeing visually! Easily the first choice in any library of DVD or blu ray for Das Rheingold.

Bravo to Sky TV and the Dirty Digger, Rupert Murdoch for broadcasting this production on Sky ARTS in High definition. I would not have touched it with a barge pole if I had to buy it to try it out.
