3.0 out of 5 stars Soldier of Fortune, 2 Nov 2011

This review is from: Laser Mission (DVD)
This is a fairly generic action film, made slightly notable by being the last one of the few films made by Brandon Lee before The Crow and his untimely death on the set. Lee plays a mercenary, which also gave the name for a previous release of the film on VHS, Soldier of Fortune, who has been tasked with contacting and rescuing a scientist (Ernest Borgnine) who has invented some overpowered killing device (basically a massive laser, hence the DVD title). Conventional action movie hijinks ensue, with some high points - such as the comic routine at the start of the second mission, and some conventional stupidity, such as bad guys that run up over open ground to the guy firing an assault rifle so he can do some karate moves to break up the gun play.

There are a number of attempts at humour injected into the mix, particularly in the first half of the film, but most of it falls flat for me - his partner in crime, the scientists daughter, gets some of the better material but it is patchy. The continued incompetence of his opponents also tends to make Lee seem lucky rather than a particularly competent mercenary, and this is even aside the comic relief duo that is trying to track him down. Everyone also oscillates between being exceptionally ruthless and giving the opponent a sporting chance, which is often an issue in these sorts of action films, but it was more jarring than usual.

Overall it is okay as long as you don't very high expectations.
