Another treasure trove from my favourite Irish band,
This review is from: Local Ground (Audio CD)
Altan delighted a packed Sydney Opera House this January and featured highlights from this new album amongst other pieces from their rich repertoir. Certainly the angelic quality of Mairéad’s voice and singing is again the most immediately striking factor, transporting the listener into any dream- or fairytale land of their choice. Again, all songs featured on this album are beautiful and tuck the heart strings, “The Wind And Rain” being my favourite so far. But it is the perfection, smoothness and warm tone of the symphonies of accordion, double fiddle, guitars and bouzouki that make Altan the most complete package of Irish music imaginable and give this album a depth that – as all the others – stands the test of multiple exposure, leaving many layers to discover.
Just one observation remains: The perfection and restraint of this studio album is in remarkable contrast to the full on assault of the recent concert experience. Let’s just say, sitting down often was not an option, as the roof lifted of Sydney’s iconic Opera House.
Maybe, time for another Altan Live album, this time preferably in DVD format!!
