This review is from: Skylanders: Giants - Booster Pack (PS3) (Video Game)
As a busy adult who works a lot sometimes you don't get to pay games as often as you want to and sometimes you just need something you can pay for distraction for an hour our so, put down and come back some other time and continue. Skylanders is just like this.
The game and whole concept itself is the comeback of Spyro the Dragon (one of my favourite games on the PSX). But it's also really clever from a marketing point of view and from a technological point of view. It's really clever.
The game is good - it takes place where skylanders: spyros adventure left off and is really more of the same. It introduces the giants characters - who light up when you put them on the portal of power and look impressive when stood next to their normal sized counterparts. As I already had the portal of power - I didn't need to get all the kit - so this is basically the game and the exclusive giant who is from the life element.
There are 8 giants to collect - all representative of each element. There are also some new characters and light core models which basically light up - which are, of course, available separately.
There are two styles of achievement in the game - ones actually in game and then the console specific ones. Some link and some are independent. There are some parts of the game that can only be accesses by giants so although you can use existing figures having a giant is going to be beneficial.
Most of the characters from the first ame are compatible and they can now be upgraded to level 15 and all of their skills and stuff are intact. However there are Series 2 models in new poses that have oranges bases which can go up to level 15 and have extra skills that can be unlocked. Some achievements though involve having to have certain models and some seem to infer you will have to buy models again that you may already have if you want to get 100% on certain things. As before when you do get a new model you can unlock a leveller level so you can upgrade your character - but I already had a few original skylanders so why do I have to fork out again to get another stealth elf?
The point is is its just to make money of course and I'm sure that they make millions becauset its addictive and you get the most out if it by having a roster of characters.
I found this game easier than the first one and you can get through it on a handful of characters but for completists to get the 100% you're probably gonna need to invest more time and money into buying other characters.
Overall a good game that is more of the same which isn't really a bad thing.
