Flawed Hong Kong classic,
This review is from: Exiled [DVD] (DVD)
Johnny To's election series kept the gangster genre of Hong Kong cinema alive. The challenge is making a film to match the high standard that these set. Exile is the classic tale of a black society hitman turning his back on his former life and trying to live a normal life.
Simon Yam plays the ex-boss that wants him back to work for him. The film doesn't have the vim and vigor of the Election series, but it is a good film in its own right. Other reviewers have compared it to Sam Peckinpah, and there are similarities in the plot structure.
The backdrop of Macau makes a bit of a change from Kowloon and Hong Kong island usually featured in these films.
