This review is from: Common One (Audio CD)
Something of a curiosity in the Morrison catalogue, Common One is a subdued and subtle album marking a boundary between the highly popular Into The Music and the reasonably successful blend of commercialism and mysticism that was Beautiful Vision.
The album is dominated by a single song, Summertime In England: a fifteen-minute stream-of-consciousness paean to mystical poets and the heritage of dark-ages England. The remaining tracks - particularly Satisfied and Spirit - are also worth a listen, however. The closing track, When Heart Is Open is over-long, trying and failing to reproduce the success of Saint Dominic's Preview's closer, Almost Independence Day, but it provides a gentle touch-down rather than a let-down.
The sound quality on the remastered version is a huge improvement on the soupy original release and makes this a required entry in your Van Morrison collection.
