3.0 out of 5 stars Transitional 60s album with loads of extra tracks, 27 Feb. 2002
This review is from: Emotions (Vinyl Bound)
There is little that can be done to levitate this album above the "transitional" or "period-piece" label that it deserves, although adding extra tracks is helping. "Emotions" was unfortunately sandwiched between two classic Pretty Things eras; the early R'n'B era and the psychedelic era which produced the inspirational "SF Sorrow" album. On the plus side, Emotions has a groovy cover, a cracking opener "Death Of A Socialite", and 2-3 other good tracks (the best being "Tripping"). But the record company overdubbed some dreadful orchestration, and the rest is a bit of dog's dinner. This release has 5 extra versions without the strings, and they sound so much better. It already had three extra tracks added for the original CD release (singles, b-sides), of which "House in the Country" is a curio as it's written by Ray Davies of The Kinks; however, one of these three has mysteriously disappeared (Me Needing You). What they should do now is add some more unreleased unstringed versions - they do exist - and then regig the running order so the new ones aren't just shoved in at the end. But a better buy than Emotions would be one of the compilations such as Unrepentant, The Psychedelic Years, or Latest Writs (a excellent one for Pretty Things beginners!).
