This review is from: Vaughan Williams: Symphonies Nos. 4-6 etc (Audio CD)
This performance of VW,s 4th symphony deservedly won "Building a Library" a few weeks ago. The sixth here is every bit as good. I've heard more involving performances of the fifth.
The standout performance though is Sylvestri's account of the Tallis Fantasia. I have never heard a better performance than this, in fact I've never heard another one remotely like it. Other conductors can make this music soggy, but with Sylvestri it soars and swoops, utterly compelling and rapturous. The recording is completely extraordinary and matches the performance brilliantly. It was made in Winchester Cathedral, and, though it is closely miked and powerful, you really hear the music swirling around in the massive acoustic. The quiet, string quartet, sections are magically ethereal.
This performance is worth the asking price alone, and even if you have favourite performances of the Tallis already, yeah even Barbirolli, you must hear this one.
