1.0 out of 5 stars silverline oil extractor does not work, 26 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Silverline 104616 Oil and Fluid Extractor Pump 4 Litre (Tools & Hardware)
Before purchasing the silverline extractor I was contemplating the purchase of the Pela oil pump.
I bought the silverline owing top its bargain price- big mistake - it is absolutely useless - do not waste your money
Threw it in the bin in disgust - it can pump water ( just ) but not oil.
I then purchased a Pela 6.5 litre pump from amazon ( ordered one of their more expensive pumps as I wanted to ensure It was good quality )
the pela pumped works incredibly well - so at least have a working pump now
The SILVERLINE pump just has no power or suction - worst thing I have ever bought from the amazon website.

I completely agree. This pump just about pumps fresh air (which is what is hissing through the useless seals) and not oil...

Agreed! OK for water but not oil.

C. Nelms says:
If you hear air hissing then of course it won't work, duh! It's a suction pump! Either tighten all the connections or put some ordinary plumbers' PTFE tape on the threads of the collecting jug and you'll instantly have a perfect seal. I've had this pump for two years and must have done fifteen oil changes with it on our two cars and it takes less time to suck the oil out of the engine than it would for me to jack up the car and open the drain plug on the sump. Don't listen to the people who say it pumps water but not oil because that makes no sense. It's driven by atmospheric pressure which *pushes* the liquid up the tube no matter whether it's oil or water.

well the ptfe tape tip is probably a good one to any new purchasers but perhaps it should supplied the tape from the manufacturers in the first place
just buy a better quality pela pump and it works from the box

Euan A says:
Basic fluid mechanics: oil is more viscous than water, so a given pressure pushing on the fluid will move viscous oil slower than water through the tube. Obviously, the warmer the oil, the lower the viscosity, so the ease and speed of fluid movement through the tubing will be:
water > warm oil >> cold oil
So a poorly sucking pump will manage to get water to move, but will REALLY struggle with oil.

I tried using PTFE tape to ensure my manual seals were good (they were), but the problem turned out to be WITHIN the blue pump unit, as found by DanH (see his 3* posting). This is a manufacturing fault, not a problem with the user, so perhaps a less patronising tone would be in order. Just because you received a functioning model is no reason to have a go at those who report genuine problems with the ones they got!
