I have used Wrox Programmer to Programmer books before and found them very good. What makes this book stand out among the many Java books around is the inclusion of a DVD containing screencasts which complement the chapters and make the practical exercises easier to do.
The book covers most of the uses of Java that I have encountered as a web developer: Swing, Hibernate, JNDI being ones I am already familiar with. If you have encountered Java before, these terms may well be familiar and the author, Yakov Fain, does a great job explaining them and how they are used in the real world.
Java Programming covers the basics in depth, which is useful for anyone starting out with this powerful tool, or who is switching from another language such as C++. Each chapter has a 'Try it' section at the end, which tests you on the subject matter of that chapter by way of questions using data and source code available from the Wrox website. The accompanying DVD screencast combines the information supplied in the text and the practical exercises to assist with the learning process.
As someone who is learning Java and beginning to use it in the workplace, I have found this book invaluable. The Eclipse IDE is recommended and indeed there is plenty of useful information about this widely used open source programme including full instructions on installing it to your machine. I would have no hesitation in recommending Yakov Fain's book to anyone interested in learning Java. It certainly is the best I have encountered to date.
