I thought Oh Inverted World was a great album - it didn't change my life but was probably my favourite album at the time of its release. Chutes too narrow was much of the same but I could see a slide happening. The music just wasn't as fresh. Wincing the Night Away had one or two good songs and I really wanted to like it but just couldn't. I think they might've been trying too hard to write a song that just wasn't there. I happened to listen to Port of Morrow by chance - I didn't buy it as I knew I'd be disappointed. I was. But rather than being jarringly disappointing like Wincing, it is just bland guitar pop - even the vocals don't seem to have Mercer's usual character. At least I don't keep having to listen to it in an attempt to get my money's worth. The Shins might well be one of those bands that started with a bang and got less interesting with each new release. In ten years time I'm sure they'll have a good best of collection. Maybe I'll even return to 'Morrow' and be pleasantly surprised.
