1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing ending (spolier alert!), 3 Jan. 2014

I have to say that, if not for the ending of the book, I would have rated this a 5 Star book!

The story was well written, engaging and had me up late, trying to get to the end. HOWEVER, I have been left with the feeling that the author did not work out the ending until she actually got there.

The ending is very disappointing. Why - if he had already had an affair with Ellie - did Cass's husband NEVER take any of her thinking / feeling seriously? How come it was so easy for him to believe that Cass was suddenly a physical threat? (yes, she had suffered post-natal depression in the past BUT had she ever been violent? so delusional?... no. So why did he suddenly believe her depression was so exptreme?). How come he never actually put two-&-two together and realised that all these things did coincide with the appearance of Ellie? - especially as he says Ellie was blackmailing him and threatening to tell Cass and Laura. So why did he encourage Ellie and Laura to meet? why let Laura stay at Ellie's? Why appear to drug Cass?

So the author would have us believe that Cass would have languished in a mental institution if Laura, her daughter, hadn't accidentally found the manuscript for Gaslight? The stupid husband was happy for his wife to be sectioned - based on the happenings / word of the woman who was blackmailing him?

And to top it all off... Cass didn't leave him and nearly kill him when she found out the affair in Rome was with Eliie and that Dan had known her all along? Hunh??

So yes, it is gripping. But a MASSIVE let down when you find out the truth at the end. Had the author even stuck with the implausible storyline that Eliie was Laura's egg donor, I might have accepted that as a better ending.

I agree with all of this, I was disappointed with all of the book especially the ending.
I found most of the plot implausible.
I didn't read the reviews as not to spoil it but wish I had now.

Lionne says:
This was a really gripping book, but I agree about the ending. There were some loose threads. Who killed the hen? Who took the knife? Could Ellie really have got into the house to do that without Dan's cooperation? It would have made better sense if there had been a gaslighting plot between Dan and Ellie. Towards the end I really thought that he would turn out to be the villain, but no - we are even invited to feel sorry for this man who actually sectioned his wife.

Oh thanks. You are not supposed to tell us the ending. Not much point reading it now.
