Out of the timeline but not out of twisty plot lines!,

It must be difficult for an author to revisit a characters distant past, and when I read the preface to this book I was filled with dread that it may not work given that having grown up with Fidelma through Tremaynes strict adherence to chronological order in the Fidelma novels (I don't count the short stories as mucking about with the timeline) I would have difficulty making the adjustment from a mature Fidelma to the character she was years before - albeit not many years.
However, Peter Tremayne has done an excellent job with this novel. Tremayne is another one of those very few historical mystery writers who can perplex and bewilder and he must have a particularly twisty and devious mind to come up with the plots he does and keep them fresh and different and weave them into a complex historical narrative.
I'm fond of the character Fidelma in the same way I used to be fond, and still am, of Ellis Peters Brother Cadfael. I hope that Peter Tremayne continues to write more about her and about the five kingdoms; a place more enlightened and civilised than anything we have now!
