Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Rollerball - Special Edition [DVD] (DVD)
James Caan intrigues me slightly. This is the bonehead who turned down One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest,Apocalypse Now,Kramer Vs Kramer,Superman...the list goes on.However i did like Thief so i thought i would give this cult classic a go.Well it is naff, worst of all boring.Caan is a dullard on skates and the supposed socio political angle is spread thin. The actual game of Rollerball is hideously boring, meatheads going in ever decreasing circles elbowing one another, riding silly bikes.Theres a story about how Caan is being forced out of the team because he is becoming a "star"thus an "individual".How much you read into it depends on the viewer.Personally i do not relate to a jock sportsman, you know its very alpha male in that sweaty homo erotic way and i dont believe i have seen such ugly actors/extras.The clothes are BAD as is the melodramatic romance, all jumpers and slow mo walks in the park. The film is dated and i have a feeling most of the reviewers here saw it originally so maybe it brings back fond memories, but Taxi Driver,The Godfather,Scarface....they may wear naff clothes but the films stand up so "dated"is not really an excuse. For a modern generation this is a redundant nothing to say relic of a movie.I made a mistake by going by the reviews on this page that certainly did not paint the film i saw.

Mr. R. J. Yardley says:
I think you've missed the point...... are you retarded?
In reply to an earlier post on 27 Sep 2011 23:29:48 BDT
Please enlighten me Yardley.I just thought it was naff.I am aware of its supposed socio political "undercurrents" but it did not work for me.In terms of your question i may be semi retarded. And anyway i see no shame in retardation,i tend to take a sympathetic view as opposed to a glib insult.

What are your views on glib insults then?
You call James Caan a "bonehead" and a "dullard" and the rest of the cast as "ugly."

More intelligent and yet by your own admission, also possibly semi-retarded.

Paul J. Jackson says:
Naff ! How come ? Even when you watch the film now its still Futuristic, look at the architecture for gods sake, the film was made in 1975, way ahead of its time. I just dont get your review, am I missing something because the film is still great now ! Compare it to the so called 2001 re-make "its ok but nothing compared to the cult classic original" going off your review I dont think there is any film that would please you ! Is there ?

I have never once red a review from someone that is so far from the truth. As you said you are likely to be "semi retarded", in fact you are wrong there also. On this occasion you have gone full retard.
You clearly are a troller, as this film wether you like it of not is clearly way ahead of it's time. Nearly all your comments come accross as petty, pedantic and not well thought out. Next time please make an effort and put some thought before you spewing forth the verbal diarrhoea that you have gifted us with on this occasion.
