This review is from: Black Books - The Complete Box Set [DVD] (DVD)
I recently purchased this series having watched just one episode some years ago. I remembered it fondly and was looking forward to a treat, the whole series! But, having looked at the first episode last night the whole thing was completely ruined by that TV curse: canned laughter. It is truly awful. I read the other day that The Office had put paid to canned laughter forever. Hopefully, that is the case. Sadly, Black Books came before The Office. It is completely beyond me as to why canned laughter is used. If you doubt me watch Scrubs and Extras (great favourites of mine) and you'll see what I mean.

I agree about canned laughter generally, not sure why then feel the need to add it, particularly with a comedy of this quality. I have the box set and think it's great though, I think I pretty much switch off to it now. I'm not sure it's anything that's been added for the DVD release however, it's always been there.

Simon Brown says:
It's not canned laughter, like most UK sitcoms it was recorded in front of a live audience. You get better performances from the actors recording shows 'live' like this.
