Mixed Bag of Greene Stories,
By A Customer
This review is from: Twenty-One Stories (Vintage Classics) (Paperback)
Written between 1929 and 1954 this is a fairly mixed bag of Graham Greene's stories. Most of them are fairly short and they all provide a snapshot of a particular moment - sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, sometimes macabre, but always curious. The longest story "The Basement Room" also appears as "The Fallen Idol" published with "The Third Man".
To be honest it is a mixed bag and few of the stories really engaged or moved me. I find Greene's novels much more satisfying. If you are a Greene fan then this is probably essential reading for you; but if you are looking for a taste of Greene, read some of his novels; and if you are looking for a really good collection of short stories, look elsewhere. If Greene wasn't the author, this collection would have been forgotton decades ago.
