This review is from: Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. 1-5 (Audio CD)
Aimard wondered if another set of these warhorses was necessary. And then he proved it was. I have many sets of these concertos. There can never be a best. But, if there could, this could be it: certainly these discs have long been my favourites for each of these concertos.
This is really a very special set that has opened my ears to a completely new side in these works. Well, I suppose it is more Solomon than Serkin or Gilels. Aimard's playing and interpretation are exceedingly musical and beautiful and very thoughtful. But his accounts are engrossing and never, not for one minute, dull. Although Harnoncourt accompanies responsively and imaginatively, it is Aimard's voice that leads: I love Harnoncourt's Beethoven but these performances are led with a character that is not Harnoncourt's, I think.
