5.0 out of 5 stars Plays on Region 2 perfectly, 31 July 2009
This review is from: Kung Fu: Complete Third Season [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
The concluding series of this cult series. The acting, production and locations are all superb, as ever. This box set is marketed as Region 1 but in fact it plays on all regions, including Region 2 in the UK.

P. Stark says:
Note: Between 2002-2011 MANY (not all) WHV USA/Canada 'Region 1' new releases of older/catalogue titles or TV series or new editions (i.e. a newly authored DVD that differs in content from any previous 'Region 1' DVD edition) would have a high likelihood of being coded for the first four domestic DVD regions. There were rare exceptions and certain big 'new' (for the time) box-office hits that did not include Region 2 coding or were locked to Region 1; but on the whole I've found MOST 2002-2011 Warner Home Video USA/Canada Studio-Produced DVDs to be pretty reliably R2 coded.

This does not apply to repackaged versions of 'real' DVDs where the older discs were used for box sets or dual-disc format re-releases with no new content or alterations. Post 2011 one would expect most 'new' American DVDs to be Region 1, 2 & 4 coded - no longer UK Region 2 coded.

These Kung Fu Season 3 DVDs are in fact not REGION FREE, Region 0, ALL REGION titles. There are six domestic SD DVD Regions with two more reserved; eight SD DVD Regions in total.

Warner Archive Manufacture On Demand (MOD) DVD-R titles are to date are Region Free.

Professional Studio-Produced 'real' DVDs from WHV USA/Canada have never been Region Free. Warner Archive titles on the other hand are. Excluding the Time-Warner owned Home Box Office whose 'real' American/Canadian DVDs & MOD titles are generally Region 1 locked.

Local licencing issues and sales numbers for the PAL WS S1 & S2 aside, the American DVDs for season 3 are Regions 1, 2, 3 & 4 coded in NTSC 720x480 1.33:1 4:3 format.

BTW the American Season 2 sets are 1.33:1 as intended and not widescreen as was the case with the UK sets. This is preferable since faux widescreen re-framing loses us a lot of vertical picture. These are also Region 1, 2, 3 & 4 coded.

Since the UK PAL R2 DVD for Kung Fu: The Movie is at this point VERY pricey NEW you may wish to try the Warner Archive Collection American DVD release. I don't own it but I'd expect it to be Region Free.

I order Warner Archive titles direct from amazon.com - if anything goes wrong they replace it or refund your money. If you choose a faster shipping method (I use the middle 'Expedited' eight day one) you pre-pay an import fees deposit at checkout. No pesky waiting at UK customs or exorbitant/excessive UK Parcel Force/Royal Mail clearance fees!!

Kung Fu: The Legend Continues is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply if bought directly through them.

MOD products are expected to play back in DVD Video "play only" devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives.
