3.0 out of 5 stars NIV Study Bible, 7 Feb. 2013
This review is from: NIV Study Bible Hardback (New International Version) (Hardcover)
It is quite difficult to give a star rating for this study bible. In many ways it is excellent, and probably the best study bible available, but it has some features which some readers will find problematic.
On the plus side, the NIV is easy to read, stylistically good, preserving something of the feel of the Authorised Version, and most people, familiar with the original languages, seem to regard it as an accurate translation. The notes are extensive and very clear. I also find them very well pitched, explaining things, when needed. I have also used most of the various other tools included, and have found them helpful.
The issues, that some readers might have, arise from the NIV being a very conservative translation. In places, this leads the translators to "correct" their translation of the original languages to remove contradictions with other parts of the bible. This can lead to a significant change in meaning from the original text, and unfortunately these instances are not flagged up. Wherever there are possible contradictions in the original text, I think it should be noted.
Additionally, where the New Testament quotes the Old Testament, there are often differences between the Hebrew original and the New Testament quotation, which tends to follow a Greek translation of the Old Testament, known as the Septuagint. Where there are Hebrew documents, which agree with the version appearing in the New Testament, the NIV usually follows that text, even if the textual evidence would normally be regarded as poor. This seems to be generally done without any note explaining the action taken. It would be preferable, I think, if the NIV gave the natural translation as the main translation, with any comments in a footnote.
This has been done, presumably, as those, who have produced the study bible believe, that there were no contradictions in the original writings, and so "correcting" is appropriate. In acting as they have, however, I think they have gone beyond the proper role of translators.
Many will not be bothered by these matters, but it may be a problem for some readers, and I think that the producers of the study bible and of the NIV translation itself, should have drawn clear attention to their approach.
I use this study bible myself, regularly, and would feel able to commend it unreservedly, if these issues were addressed.
Finally, it may be worth mentioning that the NIV, and therefore the study bible, do not include the apocrypha, in line with normal protestant practice.

Very useful review. Thank you.
One question though. Does the book as ordered from Amazon UK come with free digital version access like the US version does?
