Familiar but none the worse for that,
This review is from: From Scotland With Love (Short Story) (Kindle Edition)
I am an unashamed fan of Katie Fforde's light romance novels and was delighted when I was able to secure a free copy of this novella via NetGalley in exchange for a review.
This reads like a precis of a typical Katie Fforde novel and readers familiar with her works will enjoy themselves in ticking off the usual ingredients - grumpy older writer, pregnant dog, underestimated heroine, country better than the city, snowed in at Christmas, etc. etc. Don't let this put you off - in this case the familiar is well done and a pleasure to read. For readers new to Ms Fforde's writing this is an excellent introduction and should encourage you to read some of the longer books.
It is the length that is both the best and the worst of this novella. The writing is exactly the right length for the format - there is neither too little nor too much content so the story flows well and is elegantly paced. For the reader, however, it merely whets the appetite and you want another full length novel to get your teeth into (and the publishers have kindly provided a brief extract of a forthcoming new volume as part of the download).
By itself this is a quick and easy read (under an hour for me) but very satisfying and self-contained. An excellent, heart-warming and feel-good novella with some very witty touches. I enjoyed it very much.
