5.0 out of 5 stars The Sisters Of The Flame – I just Karn’t make my mind up about this one, 4 April 2014

This review is from: Sisters of the Flame (Doctor Who: The New Eighth Doctor Adventures) (Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor Adventures) (Audio CD)
First released in 2008, this is the seventh episode of the second season of standalone releases for Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor outside of the monthly range of Big Finish releases. This is a one disc release, with a single 50 minute episode. There are some interviews with cast and crew at the end of the disc.

The second season was an uneven one, scaling the heights with releases such as ‘The Zygon That Fell To Earth’, and plumbing the depths with tales such as ‘Dead London’. This opening episode of the two part finale bucks the trend by being average. Neither great nor terrible, it does its job and leaves it at that.

It has at its heart an interesting idea. Early on the Doctor vanishes, and the bulk of the sotry is carried by Sheridan Smith as Lucie. This is a great idea, and Smith works the material to get every last emotional response from it. In that level this is a good piece. But unfortunately the plot and script let things downa bit, there is not build up of threat or tension, the villains are poorly realised and there is a bit of a muddle of a plot.

I won’t try to summarise the story, mainly because I didn’t really follow it. It relies heavily on the listener being familiar with ‘The Brain Of Morbius’, one of the all time classic serials. On the whole this is a poor production, raised to average by the impressive performance of Sheridan Smith, and Alexaner Sidding as Rosto, the policeman of the future who proves to be the most interesting character in the story. 3 stars.
