This review is from: The American Future: A History From The Founding Fathers To Barack Obama (Paperback)
I never thought I'd give Simon Schama only two stars, but this doesn't work for me. This is mainly becuase this was written in the hopeful days of President Obama's election, sometimes with a rather more wide-eyed awe than a professional historian should perhaps manifest, and in the wake of the rise of the Tea Party that seems somehwt ill-judged, or perhaps ill-timed. There is also more of an element of "the book of the series" about it, and whilst Schama's "folsky" style is tv-friendly, it doens't work as well on the printed page. For both reason, I was left with a feeling of disappointment, which is a shame as personally I'm a great admirer of Simon Schama's work.
