Really surprised by the good reviews of this book as I've travelled through 5 South American countries using it so far (with 2 more to go) and I have completely lost faith in the book. Of course much of the info is helpful and accurate however there are just SO many inaccuracies and mistakes that after a while you just have to take everything with a pinch of salt. Examples of mistakes include details about the presence or number of atm's in a town, the quality of an establishment (cafe or whatever), locations of establishments on maps. The book is FULL of scary anecdotes about how 'dangerous' much of South America is, deposited most of these places seeming fine in reality, some more specifics about various threats might allow the reader to make more informed decisions and not be so paranoid about minimal threats.
If I could start over I would have gone with lonely planet
